Filtered Jar Lids

Jar lids with filters and injection ports are a very important part of a cultivator's arsenal of equipment.  The lid and filter are what makes or breaks a spawn run since it must provide the cultivator an efficient means of inoculation, while still maintaining sterility, and providing for gas exchange.  There are several filters used by the community at large:  Polyfil, Synthetic Filter Disk (does not require foil during the sterilization process), EZ Felt (the thick kind that makes noise when you wobble it back and forth), Tyvek

Supplies:

Lids
Filters
RTV Silicone (auto parts store, used for intake manifold gaskets)
Power drill with 1/4" and 3/8" drill bits

Step 1:  Drill 1 hole of each size on either side of the lid.  Put the 3/8" hole a little off the center of the lid.

Step 2:  Use RTV silicone to attach the filter of your choice, make sure that there is no gap in the silicone the entire way around the hole.  Double up EZ Felt.  Disregard this step for polyfil and tyvek.

Step 3:  Use RTV silicone to fill in the smaller hole.  Spread the silicone out a little bit on each side of the hole for added support.  This makes your self healing injection port.  Once dried and cured, you can stick a needle through the silicone to perform injections.

Step 4:  Allow 24 hours for silicone to cure, then use as needed.  If using polyfil or tyvek, see step 5

Step 5:  Polyfil:  Insert through the hole thickly
Tyvek:  When putting the lid on the jar, place 2 sheets of tyvek over the lid and screw the ring down over it.

Tyvek and polyfil need to be replaced regularly.  Synthetic filter disks and EZ Felt can be washed with a diluted bleach/water solution.
